2017-05-09 · The Texas Tech Nanophotonics Center – led by Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Horn professors Hongxing Jiang, the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. Chair; Jingyu Lin, the Linda F. Whitacre Chair; and research professor Jing Li – recently received a $3 million grant from the High Energy Laser-Joint Technology Office within the Department of Defense. The Center for Nanophotonics conducts research and development on manipulation of photons-electrons in nanoscale materials for innovative photonic devices and emerging technologies. The Center’s research areas cover a broad spectrum, ranging from basic to applied, and dealing with state-of-the-art nanoscale material synthesis, Nanophotonics involves the creation and manipulation of advanced materials at the nanoscale, or one-billionth of a meter, that can produce and sense light. Lighting Nanophotonics research will transform lighting for homes and businesses.

Spanning a wavelength range from 364 to 200 nm, these materials may be used to produce deep ultraviolet light emitting diodes and solar blind detectors. The Center for Nanophotonics at TTU is a focal point in Texas for conducting innovative research and development on active nano-scale photonic materials and devices (devices that convert light to electricity or vise versa). Nanophotonics focuses on the interaction of photons with nano-structures, such as carbon nano-tubes, nano metal particles, nano crystals, semiconductor nano dots, photonic crystals, tissue and DNA. The journal covers the latest developments for physicists, engineers and material scientists, working in fields related to: About Our main interest is nanophotonics, the study of how light interacts with nano- and microscale structures. We study nanophotonic structures — such as photonic crystals, microresonators, nanowires, and metamaterials — for applications in security, communications, energy, biology, and consumer products. Peter Kang Assistant Professor at University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States 222 connections Speaker: Dr. Chase T. Ellis (Electronics Science and Technology Division, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory) Title: Low-Loss Nanophotonics in the mid- and long-wave infrared Abstract: The high optical losses of metal-based plasmonic materials in the infrared have driven an extensive search for alternative lower-loss materials that can support plasmonic effects, such as sub-diffraction confinement The Center for Nanophotonics conducts research and development on manipulation of photons-electrons in nanoscale materials for innovative photonic devices and emerging technologies.
